Thursday Blurbs

1. NHL opening night for the SHARKS tonight! We are sooooooooo excited. I took the kids to the last preseason game on Saturday. It was a birthday present for Buzz. He picked out this game because he wanted to see them play Calgary.

2. It's raining. I have the heaviest period in the history of periods. I'm tired. I'm cranky. I'm not much fun. This should count as like 6 blurbs.

3. I'm taking Buzz to a "multi-cultural" fashion show at his school tonight. One of his friends is going to be in it so he is really excited to go. And there is a spaghetti dinner to follow... that might have something to do with it.

4. Drama is getting close to her due date. She hits the 30 weeks mark this week. Her mom and I am planning a baby shower for her in early November. Any suggestions for games? I told her I'd put a list together for her to choose from. I've never actually thrown a baby shower before which makes me wish I had paid more attention to the ones (including my own) that I have gone too. Help!

5. My old high school basketball team is getting inducted into the school's "Sports Hall of Fame." There is a dinner and everything. When I heard the news from my friend and former teammate we both had the same thought: "Even us? (the scrubs)" Yes, she said. Even us! Whoohoo.

6. The latest in the soccer team drama is that we are very close to kicking out the current manager. Unfortunately the league requires at least one adult (coach or manager) to hold a coaching license. This is what the current team manager brings to the team. A piece of paper. Our trainer holds a license in the UK, which doesn't transfer to anything significant over here. We have someone lined up who is licensed and willing to take over the team in name only. As soon as he is added on, "dillhole" (as we fondly refer to him) will be gone.

7. Management issues aren't all we have had to deal with. It seems we have another coach attempting to poach two of our players. Oh and did I mention one of our team's old coach and manager was involved? Yeah, he called this other coach and encouraged him to contact the two families... It goes on and on. These kids are 10 and 11 for crying out loud. These people men act like they're trying to build a World Cup team. Watch out when the mommies take over!

8. The autopsy report on my neighbor's daughter who died unexpectedly last week said she died of alcohol poisoning. No foul play, just sadly irresponsible behaviour. The girl had a lot of friends... and her son. Her little 16-month old son will be living with her parents and is now my newest neighbor. I just wish it was under happier circumstances.

9. Focus: I wish my kids would focus on their school work half as much as our dog focuses on someone with a sandwich. I just wish I could somehow bottle that patience and determination.

10. Woody is sick. He has a sore throat and runny nose. He is tired. He is cranky. He is not much fun at all. This sounds familiar.

11. It is still raining (((sigh))).

Opening night for the 'Canes was last night. Didn't fare so well in the OT shootout.

BUT.

Stanley was in the house. Somehow that makes it all okay. :-)

I never did understand how into it the soccer coaches, and parents got. I have seen parents of 6 year olds screaming at the kids. I have seen kids in tears. I just don't get it. But that is not you right? I didn't think so.

Oh the drama. Wwy are those stupid coaches trying to take out their playing sports fantasies on their children? huh, why? that's just dumb.

And I love the rain. We haven't got much up here, why are you getting it all? Huh, why???!?!?!

Baby shower games. Hate them. Loathe me. But, let's see. There's the ever popular trying to diaper a doll while wearing a blindfold and gloves. Then you have the game where you wrap a little door prize present up about 15 times, play music and when the music stops whoever has the present unwraps one layer and so on until the person who gets to the no more wrapping paper and gets to keep the gift. *yawn* The only other one that I can think of is putting a whole bunch of baby pins or those little fake baby bottles in a clear container and who ever guesses the closet to how many are actually in there wins a prize.

SOrry, I'm not much help. I really really hate baby shower games! I know you can download some online, maybe you should try that?!?! :)

Jennifer- you have lived the dream my friend!

Z-NOOOOOOOOOOO WAY are we like that. Our mission is to get rid of that behavior. It is just funny how those parents "justify" themselves...it would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

Jodi- come and get it (the rain) I certainly have no use for it right now. Thanks for the ideas.

Let's see baby shower games. Have everyone but on a little neclace with a plastic binky on it. Everytime someone says the word baby the person who heard them gets to take the necklace from them at the end of the shower the person with the most wins a little present.

Baby bingo is popular too, not sure how it is played though. Good luck and sorry about the crappy period!

what is a cultural fashion show? Do the kids dress up like people from other countries? Sorry I have to ask so I can start preparing for the day when I have to whip something up for my daughter.

As for soccer-- so much drama!!!

My sister and I just had a shower for our baby sister. No games other then passing a sheet of paper around where everyone guessed date of birth, sex and weight. The eating, chatting and gift opening took up 3 hours!

Hope you feel better soon and that it stops raining!

I dont like baby shower games, I requested there to be none at both of mine!! Could be because I get super competitive and accuse people of cheating(true story..thing I'll blog about that tomorrow!).

Anyway, here's some ideas:

Buy about 8-10 different kinds of baby food. Take off the labels and pass them around for people to guess what they are. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE LIDS!! Let the mom take them home to use for the baby!! Buy some newborn diapers and about 6-10 candybars. Smash up a candy bar in each diaper and have people smell the "dirty" diaper to guess what kind of candy bar it is. Then let the new mom take home the remaining diapers.

As for prizes.. make sure you buys things for the new mom. Like bottles, breast pads, binkies, diapers, burpclothes, bibs..whatever and when the person wins you give them the prize and then they give it back to the new mom.

Got it? Good!

Jen- WOW! Got it. Thanks for the ideas.

Val- I haven't heard of baby bingo, I'll have to find out more. Thanks.

Bonnie- It was the cutest thing ever. Especially the little ones. Yes, it was students dressed up in costmes or formal wear from their native cultures.

Onetallmomma- something tells me this croud won't be as comfortable together as your crowd was with your sis. They will need to be constantly entertained.

SWFM- always nice to hear from you!
Thanks.
